Me he encontrado con la duda frecuente acerca de la efectividad y obsolescencia de las cintas magnéticas, como si fueran un consumible que se encuentra en decadencia. Pero, aunque se piense lo contrario, los centros de datos nunca han dejado de utilizar cintas; los gerentes de TI han seguido usándolas como el “gran respaldo”, ya que atrapan cualquier tipo de datos al que son expuestas. La mayoría de estos profesionales han visto siempre al disco como una forma de “complementar” a las cintas, no de reemplazarlas. Incluso aquellos que optaron por reemplazar han descubierto que las solas ventajas económicas que esta brinda, no son fáciles de dejar.
Información en crecimiento constante
¿Cuál es el origen de esta tendencia? Es algo sencillo: el disco no es suficiente, incluso con deduplicación. Los productos basados en disco, están cumpliendo las necesidades de protección de datos, pero los clientes están buscando cintas para reducir su crecimiento y para hacer una vez más el respaldo confiable.
Una vez agotada la euforia inicial de los ahorros que trae la deduplicación, los datos primarios siguen creciendo, y el respaldo a esos datos reclama una mayor capacidad en los medios de almacenamiento. Para tal efecto, la confiabilidad de la cinta es incomparable.
La efectividad de la cinta
La fiebre del respaldo en disco fue impulsada por las preocupaciones sobre la confiabilidad de la cinta. En la primera década del 2000, hubo innumerables historias acerca de los errores de backup en cinta, consideradas un “chivo expiatorio”, ya que con base en la experiencia de empresas especializadas en almacenamiento de información, los fallos en las copias de seguridad fueron causados a menudo durante el proceso, más que haber sido originados en el hardware.
Con ello, la fiabilidad de los discos está ahora en la mira. Mientras las capacidades han aumentado, también lo han hecho las posibilidades de errores y fallos.
Velocidad asegurada
Ciertamente el disco tiene ventajas, como a la hora de recuperar un solo archivo. Pero ya no tiene la ventaja en el rendimiento de copia de seguridad, suponiendo que la red esta caída o lenta, ni tiene tampoco ya una ventaja para recuperaciones totales y de gran tamaño.
Esencialmente, el disco se pone head start en 45 segundos sobre la cinta, tomando en cuenta que la cinta esté ubicada y puesta sobre la unidad drive. Si la restauración es menos de 45 segundos, tomando como ejemplo una restauración de archivos individuales, entonces probablemente, el disco es más rápido. Pero si la restauración desde el disco toma de 3-4 minutos, entonces la cinta será superior a pesar de la ventaja original en disco de 45 segundos. Entre más grande o más larga sea la tarea de restauración, la ventaja de la recuperación en cinta será más grande.
Almacenamiento práctico
La cinta magnética se adapta mejor a la transición de la información del respaldo al archivado (archiving). Aunque muchos de los equipos de respaldo basados en disco han añadido características para manejar mejor los desafíos de la retención a largo plazo, en cinta está previamente resuelto. No tiene problemas de lectura del índice en información deduplicada, hay mejoras en el manejo de energía así como en la autoconfiguración para expandir su capacidad. Los usuarios no solo utilizan la cinta para respaldar los repositorios de información y bases de datos, también la utilizan para quitar carga al respaldo primario.
